Madhubani Painting is a folk-art of Bihar, India. It is said that it dates back to the times of Ramayana, when during the marriage ceremony of Ram - Sita, Raja (king) Janak asked the artists of Mithilanchal (Maithili speaking region) to paint the entire kingdom in an art which showcased the culture of the community, expressed love and celebration. And hence Madhubani Painting ( also called Mithila Painting) came to life. This widely appreciated art-form has seen many changes, but stood firm, true to its root, and still evolving.

Born and brought up in Bihar, I consider myself fortunate to learn this art directly from the artists practicing it over generations.

Welcome to the world of FOLK-ART, and you are now going to witness a glimpse of the rich heritage of India.

Broadly there are five categories of knowing the folk-art of mithilanchal, India, Madhubani Painting, namely - Kachanai, Bharani, Godhna, Tantrik and Kohbar.

The segment, Godhna was adopted in the mainstream Madhubani painting many years after the painting got recognition. This style of folk-art was initially practiced as an alternative to jewelry and the minute intricacies, small designs and circular fashion are among the few ways to identify this style.

This painting of mine depicts “Radha Krishna” in the center, which is a little rare sight in Godhna, since it is conventionally about nature. What makes this painting unique is the message that love (shown through Radha Krishna) is such an integral part of our lives that it is a part of nature. It does not know to differentiate and neither does it divide. It is pure and sacred.

This painting, Adishesha is inspired by mythology, like many other paintings in my Madhubani Art series.

Sheshnaag, in the painting, is being praised for his companionship, loyalty, compassion and devotion. The pair of fish in water offers lotus to sheshnaag for supporting life. And another pair light “Panchdiyas” as to offer their prayers. Sheshnaag is believed to be holding life and time moves ahead as he uncoils himself.

Panchdiya (along with navdeep) is considered auspicious in the Mithilanchal community.
